An interesting story about a low level scholar who joins a research group on Earth, looking at old empire war bots. While at a party, she gets conned into making a bet on the next war bot battle. She pursues the bet-maker, who turns out to be a war-bot pilot, and discovers a hidden early empire war bot that could make her research career, and save her from the bet.
She makes a deal with the pilot to make the war bot work. But events may soon be out of their control, as a war bot Team wants to enslave the pilot, while the scholar discovers her work may be stolen to support another scholar. But if they can get the war bot to work and win the next battle, they may turn things around: assuming they don’t get killed first.
